////List all the elements showing that America is becoming more and more violent. ///

In text, and mainly in the part two, there are numerous sentences showing that the United States become more and more violent. First of all, the journalist writes at the beginning of the second part: « America’s youth is becoming increasingly violent: (l5) «. Next, a few later, there is a sentence: « murder arrests for children between 10 and 14 went up by a third between 1988 and on 1992 ( l6 ) » and « to work out that the 200 to 400 millions gun in the United States … guns now kill more American teenage boys than all natural talk combined (18.19) «. Moreover, the last element is « 600 per hundred increase in gang murders in the four years to 1993 «. From these various quotations, we can say and think that the USA undergo a rise of violence.

///How does the journalist explain this growing violence? ////

The journalist explains the reasons of this increase in the violence. He thinks that this rise can be explained by the very great number of fire weapons in United States (more than of inhabitants(plus que d’habitants)) and that the young people possess it like the text underlines it(et que les jeunes en possèdent comme le texte le souligne) « It doesn’t t take has genius to work out that the 200 to 400 millions guns in the United States … guns now kill more American teenage boys than all natural talk combined (l8.19) «. Indeed, he thinks that the problem is that fire weapons circulate freely among young people, which provoke crimes

//////Is it the only reason? How do we know? ////

However, I suggest that it is not the only reason because the journalist said « part of the problem (l 17), one deducts from it that the weapons are only a part of the problem. Indeed, we can think that there are other reasons: First of all, it could be a problem following of education with a particular mentality dictated by the violence. Next, the American society might be a violent society, people are timid, which carry distrust like in « Bowling for Columbine «. Finally, we can suppose that the American justice is rather repressive, and that young people are afraid of the police and of his repression.

/////Why can Phoenix be said to be a city of contrasts? ////

Phoenix can be said to be a city of contrasts due to several reasons: At first sight, we can say that this city is a contrasted city especially on the social point of view. The city is divided into two there is the rich districts « the old and the rich go to find winter sun (l 22) and the districts poor in suburb « but in its poorer parts, gang warfare is strangling the streets (l22) ». Actually, we are under the impression that there are two different cultures, two opposite social circles which coexist: we can say that it is for these reasons that Phoenix can be called « city contrasted »
